Moving to a new home is a very exciting event. You're leaving your current home behind, but you're about to make some wonderful new memories in a fresh location. If you have a toddler in tow, the process of moving can be a little bit more challenging. Toddlers want to be involved in everything that you're doing, they're constantly grabbing at things, and they could be in harm's way if you aren't careful. They may also have issues with their new routines and new location. It’s a good idea to take some steps to prepare for a move with a toddler.

Talk to Your Kids

According to the Art of Happy Moving, as soon as you're sure that you're going to be moving, you should start talking to your kids about the move. Let them know where you will be going and when. If possible, you can drive by your new home several times to show them where they will be living. If they have any questions about the move, you can address them one at a time. Leaving some time between the announcement and the actual move allows them to become more accustomed to the idea.

Get Them Involved

It's a good idea to let your kids be involved on moving day. It's tempting to find them a babysitter for the day, but then they miss out on a lot of the excitement. You can find things that your children can help with. Even a toddler can pick out their new room, arrange some toys, and explore. According to Move-Tastic, you should make sure you pack snacks for the day of the move because you likely won't be able to cook food for your kids. You should try to pack some picnic-style meals for your first night in the new house.

Try to Stick to a Routine

Your toddler probably thrives on their daily schedule, so you'll want to stick to their schedule as best as you can. According to SchKidules, having a schedule will help your family communicate better and avoid stress. Try to start the day in the new house the same way that you normally would. If you can work in naptime at some point during the day, you can prevent meltdowns from occurring.

Moving with a toddler in tow requires some creative thinking and planning. However, all of the planning that you do will make your life much easier in the long run. To make your move go as smoothly as possible, get your kids prepared and excited!
