Top 6 Outdoor Activities to Do With Your Children This Spring
Posted by Eileen O'Shanassy on 9th Mar 2020
Spring is the perfect time to go out and play with your child. There are so many fun springtime activities that you can do together. The great news is that you will be making memories that they will one day tell their children and grandchildren about doing with you.
Fly Kites
Gently blowing spring winds are a great time to fly a kite. You can even help your child make one at home before heading out on your great kite-flying adventure. You can let your child decorate a piece of copy paper in any design that they want. Then, fold the paper in half. Put the fold on the left side of the paper, and draw a diagonal line from about 1 inch from the fold at the top to about 1 inch from the opening at the bottom. Fold the top layer of the paper down over the line that your child has just created. Flip the paper over and repeat the process. Tape your folds into place. Add a skewer across the top of the paper just under the lowest point of your fold. Turn the kite back over and straighten it up. Place a piece of tape on both sides of the paper close to the bottom. Use a hole punch to tie a piece of string to the kite. Then, all that's left to do is to take the kite outside and enjoy flying it.
Have a Picnic
Spring is also the perfect time to have a picnic. Let your child help you prepare the food for your picnic adventure. Ants on a log is a great snack that your child can quickly help you prepare. Start by slicing celery into pieces about 4-inches long. Then, help your child fill the middle of the celery with peanut butter. Add some raisins on top as the ants. As you make this delicious picnic food, you can talk about the things that you might see while on your picnic.
Grow a Garden
Starting a garden is a great way to teach kids about the activities that happen in the spring. You can easily make a sprout viewer out of a recycled, clear plastic cup. Start by cutting construction paper strips to line the sides of the cup. Then, add a damp paper towel. Place some dry bean seeds on the paper towel. Then, sit the cup on a warm windowsill. Watch with your child every day until the roots emerge. Once the weather is warm enough, you can transplant the plant to your garden.
While gardening is a lot of fun with children, so is planting a tree because it can serve as a constant reminder of the fun day that you spent together. Not only is it a fun activity to do with your children, but there are also several benefits of planting trees in your backyard. The right tree can help lower your home's energy bill. It can serve as a home to wildlife and birds that your child will love seeing. Planting trees also helps create a healthier environment.
Go for a Bike Ride
Spring is the perfect time to go for a family bike ride. If your children are used to going on bike rides with you, then spring is a great time to go on a bike riding scavenger hunt. Create a list of things in your neighborhood that are signs that spring has arrived. Give each child a copy of the list and encourage them to see how many of the signs they can spot as you ride along.
Make Paper Mache Eggs
If you are cooped up inside because the spring rains have arrived, then consider making paper mache eggs. Start by blowing up a balloon to make the base of your egg. Then, tear up a newspaper into strips. In a disposable bowl, combine two parts water to one part flour. Whisk together until well combined. Then, use the mixture to paste the newspaper to the balloon. After you are sure that you have got the balloon covered, let it sit for a few hours to dry. Finish by painting the newspaper with a white coat of paint before using color paint to decorate it.
Read a Book
Reading a book at the park is a fun activity to do in the spring. There are several spring stories that your child might enjoy hearing. "Who Likes Rain?" is a fun story about animals who would prefer that it rains. "What Will Hatch?" is another fun story about all the baby animals that are born in the spring. When you finish reading these stories, then you might want to walk around and see if you can spot bird's nests or other signs that spring has arrived.
There are many fun things that you can do with your child in the spring. Why not choose your favorite from these activities and get started today?
