Ask anyone: snow days make some of the happiest childhood memories! No school, hot chocolate, sledding, and playing the snow—what more could a kid ask? For parents, however, snow days can be a challenge. While we all remember the carefree bliss of snow days, but the truth is, our parents probably put a little more effort into keeping us busy than we ever realized!

Since this winter seems to be turning into one epic snowstorm after another, most parents probably need a little help keeping kids occupied all day long. Check out these ideas to make your next snow day a day to remember:

1. Play ball. Your kids have done it all by 9 a.m.: snowball fights, snowmen, forts, sledding, someone is already crying from getting an ice chunk in the eye, and your cranky neighbor wants your kids to stay out of her driveway. Time to refocus! Just because it’s snowy, it doesn’t mean your kids can’t play their outdoor favorite games—the snow just makes it more fun! Dig out soccer balls, basketballs, and footballs for goofy outdoor fun.

2. Get crafty. At some point, kids need to come in and rest. Before they grab the remote and start a TV marathon, get out the arts and craft projects—even if it’s as simple as paper scraps and glue. (These are also essential to have handy if you lose power—it’s more fun by candlelight!)

3. Create online. Eight hours is a long time to keep kids busy—creative websites can come to the rescue! Give yourself a break (and a little time to catch up on work) and give kids a constructive purpose creating and designing.

4. Get organized. Yes, kids can help—whether it’s sorting the recycling, going through old photos, or cleaning out closets, taking advantage of having everyone home to tackle projects will make time fly—and make kids really appreciate their free time when it’s all complete!

5. Go exploring. When it’s safe to get outside, grab the kids and the dog and set out on an adventure. It may be hard to leave your cozy house, but it’s worth it—your neighborhood will be transformed into a winter wonderland, and there is no better way to meet your neighbors than to lend a hand shoveling or digging out.
